Some U.S. troops could begin coming home from Iraq this year, according to a recent CNN report. Unfortunately, CNN is quoting Colin Powell, whose pending resignation makes me wonder if he’s speaking on behalf of the Administration, or simply of his own hopes. But that’s not the biggest “if.”
The withdrawal, it turns out, depends on Iraqi security forces’ willingness to take over the tasks that Coalition troops have been performing all this time.
The United States might be able to withdraw some troops from Iraq this year if Iraqi forces can take a greater role in security, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday.
“With the assumption of that greater burden, the burden on our troops should go down, and we should start to see our numbers going in the other direction,” Powell said in an interview with National Public Radio.
Really, you’d think Colin Powell would know better than to rely on such an assumption. After all, to assume makes an ass out of…
Well, you get the point.
