Idiots Running The School System
Recently as part of putting together a homeschool unit study on geography, I visited one of my favorite sites to gather information on various countries, including coloring pages of their flags. Now, although I’m a highly educated person as a couple of bachelor’s degrees, an ABT in English Lit and a law degree all attest, I confess to hardly recognizing any foreign flags. (And, no, I won’t tell you how few.)
As with so many of my educational deficiencies, I am determined that the Big-Eyed Boy does not share them. So I printed the flag pages and we’ve begun coloring them, adding notes as we learn more. We study a new country each week and post its colored flag, along with our information sheets, on the wall of our school area in the kitchen. We call it the “Wall of the World.” Eventually I hope the combination of visual, auditory and kinetic work will help the information take root in his head as well as my own.
Lucky for me, I don’t have a school principal looking over my shoulder or I might be forced to take those flags down and suspended from my job if I refused.
