ANKARA — A 15-year-old girl who gave birth to a child that she said resulted from a rape became the latest victim of so-called “honor killings” in Turkey, newspapers said Monday.
The young girl, from a mainly Kurdish town near Turkey’s eastern border with Iran, was murdered by an elder brother Saturday, press reports said. The victim, named only as Naile, had apparently not been aware that she was pregnant until she started feeling unwell and was admitted to a hospital, where she gave birth to a boy, the reports added.
She later told her mother that the pregnancy had resulted from a rape. When other members of the family heard the news, the elder brother shot her dead at point-blank range in a street of the town, and then fled.
The Vatan newspaper quoted the local public prosecutor as saying that the family were believed to have convened a meeting at which they designated the brother to kill the girl, in order to remove what they saw as a stain on their honor. (Source: The Middle East Times.
Not surprisingly, there’s no word as to the man who raped her and with the girl’s death, chances are we’ll never know.

That culture needs to be destroyed utterly.

Hey Flint … why don’t you get a gun and go over to Turkey and start the job if you really think so? If not, there are some uneducated and brutal cultures (say … Islam?) looking for a diety just … like … you.
What happened to that poor girl is extremely F’d up. That’s all I was going to say until I saw Flint’s comment. LOL

Uh, Jim, I think he said “that culture needs to be destroyed utterly”. He didn’t say anything about killing people.

Now, remember, boys and girls, this is the culture we are supposed to sit down with, hold hands with, and sing “Kumbaya” with… They are just as responsible, mature, and rational as we are, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with their culture in any way…
*blinks*
Woah. I think I just channeled a liberal there for a second… EWWWWW!!!!
*goes to scrub for hours and hours and hours and hours and hours…*

Can’t a guy protest GENOCIDE without getting attacked here?
Linoge, you are contradictory evidence that our culture is more mature and/or rational than Islam if you espouse total eradication of Islam.
October 25, 2006 at 9:31 am
Again, Jim, the only person who used the word genocide was you. If you saw that as an attack, maybe you need to get thicker skin.
October 25, 2006 at 10:05 am
Explain to me how you could utterly destroy a culture without genocide.
October 25, 2006 at 12:47 pm
Explain to me how to explain anything to you.
October 25, 2006 at 12:55 pm
Now see, Foxy? That’s a personal attack. It’s the sign of a weak argument, or a lack of an argument. I don’t feel personally offended at personal attacks here, since you don’t know me. But you assume that simple words and sentences are not sufficient for me to understand your position. I have a college degree, so they are.
Just use words Foxy. Try to explain how you can eradicate a culture without using genocide.
October 25, 2006 at 2:21 pm
Wiki says:
“Culture has been called “the way of life for an entire society.” As such, it includes codes of manners, dress, language, religion, rituals, norms of behaviour and systems of belief.[3]”
You can eradicate a culture (ancient customs) with, say, education. For example, in our early culture, we burned “witches” at the stake. We don’t do that any more. That culture, you could say, has been eradicated.
No genocide.
October 25, 2006 at 3:29 pm
Uh, I guess I won THAT stupid argument.
Flint, you can say that again.
October 25, 2006 at 4:19 pm
Well if that is what Flint meant, then you did win it, and it was a stupid argument. But I do not think that is what Flint meant. He said the culture should be “utterly destroyed,” and you are toning that down to a kinder-gentler “educate and mature.” Not the same thing, but Flint has stopped representing himself so … what’s the point?
Regardless, I do agree with your approach Foxy.

Hell, Jim, I don’t know the answer to the whole honor killing thing, the cliterectomy thing, or the jihad thing.
You may be right about Flint’s statement. It reflects a huge frustration at attempting to understand a culture that is completely foreign to us.
October 25, 2006 at 5:36 pm
I’m not in favor of destroying that – or any – culture. I do believe that the implicit acceptance of honor killings within the Islamic culture can be changed without resort to draconian methods. As we’ve previously discussed, many cultures formerly sanctioned such deaths but no longer do.
However, I would like to point out that “destroying a culture” is not synonymous with genocide.
Now, feel free to continue your flame war.
October 25, 2006 at 5:41 pm
Ok, Jim. Flame on!
October 25, 2006 at 5:49 pm
No flaming necessary; I think we mostly agree. However, amid a clash of cultures, careful choice of language might help us avoid WWIII.
