Bit The Bullet

Well, I did it. I’ve ordered a new laptop, and already I’m panicking. Should I have waited for Vista to come out? Should I have held off until Black Friday, even though we’ll be out of town? Should I have tried replacing the wad of chewing gum and duct tape that held the old one together in the hope of getting a few more good months — weeks, even — out of it?

No, I did not buy a Mac. Yes, I know 13% of you think they’re the only way to go. But I’m an old dog, and I don’t feel like learning new tricks. I want to open the box, turn on the computer and feel like I already know some of what I’m doing. (Not to mention that I already own Windows versions of the programs I most frequently use and can’t afford to replace them with Mac versions now.)

If you’re really curious, you can check out what I bought: there’s a picture of it in the sidebar (right above the PayPal link). And, hey, if you happen to be planning on buying anything from Amazon, go ahead and click that link then continue shopping for what you want. The referral fees from your purchase will benefit Yours Truly.

So, this is my early Christmas, Valentines, Mother’s Day, birthday and anniversary present all rolled into one. Yay!

14.1 inch screen? That’s too small for me. I like Toshibas though.

Hey, I thought size wasn’t supposed to matter?

I’ve never tried Toshiba before. My first “laptop” was a ‘portable word processor’ by Tandy. (I don’t even want to tell you how many years ago that was.) Then I had one of those Brother ‘portable’ things that sounded like machine gun fire when it came time to print out all the stuff I’d typed into memory.

About 12 years ago I had an IBM ThinkPad — best laptop I’ve ever had. That thing was sturdy as all get out! (For instance, one night in a rather romantic gesture, VH swept the laptop and other items off the top of my desk and… anyway, the only thing that survived, besides the two of us, was the laptop.)

When the IBM finally died, I moved on to Dell laptops. I’ve gone through 2 of those in the past 10 years and, although I’ve been very happy with them, I’ve been shocked at the cost of replacement/upgrade components.

So, I decided to go with Toshiba this time. I know nothing about them, but the reviews I’ve read have been relatively favorable and it seems like they offer good bang for the buck.

Anyone else have an opinion about Toshiba?

Nothing wrong with a 14.1 inch screen when it’s hooked up to a 36 inch plasma :)

But seriously, laptops are suppose to be portable, the bigger the screen the bigger the unit, and out the window goes the ease of lugging it around with you.

Not to mention the cost goes up, too!

Congrats!!

My roommate had one of those Brother things when we were in college. Machine gun fire about covers it.

Heh. I lived in an apartment back when I had the Brother. I remember printing up my novella for my Creative Writing 411 class at 3:30 in the morning. Pissed my neighbor off BIG time since it woke him up and then kept him up for the next hour while it printed. He had a tough final early the next morning, and I spoiled his sleep. I felt bad, but I had no choice but to print it since my class was early, too.

He moved out the following month.

Hey Kate, I have a Toshiba just like yours! I love it… no problems, easy to manuever through. Only the usual problems, fighting with The Men I Live With over whose turn it is (we all sneer at the clunky pc…)

Thanks for putting my mind at ease, Dana! Since my computer access has been at the mercy of The Boys I Live With after the chewing gum holding my old laptop together actually melted and messed with the power supply, I’ve made it clear that this one is MINE and they’re not going to get to use it unless they grow breasts.

Glad you got a new computer - nothing better than more speed and more RAM. I’m a Macintosh user and love it, but I totally understand about not switching. I was going to switch to PC at one time but had too much invested in mac software. And as you said, it’s just too much trouble to learn a new system. Anyway, thanks for stopping by and saying hello. Have a great month! Cindy
