Keep Your Privates Private!

I can’t help chuckling over the indignation so many folks are expressing that a Southwest Airlines employee told a passenger her outfit was too revealing for a “family flight”.

The passenger, Kyla Ebbert, points out that she routinely wears far more revealing clothing for her job at Hooters (which, IMVO, proves she’s clueless about what’s “family friendly”).

Yesterday Ebbert modeled the outfit in question for Matt Lauer the Today Show. It seems Ebbert and her family are now suing the airlines over the incident. Unfortunately for them, Ebbert may be the best witness for the defense in that lawsuit.

See, after standing and tugging down on her skirt to convince people on national TV that her outfit was not inappropriate, Ebbert took her seat … and treated the world to a first-class white panty cootchie shot.

I’m probably not the only one who, after seeing that, heard a little voice in the back of my mind saying “The prostitution rests, your honor.”

I don’t know. At least she DID have panties on. It seemed like the media loves showing pictures of Paris, Britney, et al revealing more. Plus once she sat down in her seat the only ones she would being exposing anything to are people who made a point turning around and looking. If it had truly been “inappropriate” wouldn’t it have caused more of a problem in the waiting area?

For the most part I think this falls under “If it offends you then don’t look.” All they did was try to make an example of her when they had no right to.

Sorry, Kate; I think your venom is misplaced this time, and well off-target.

Southwest flights from Los Angeles to Las Vegas on Friday nights are like going to a strip club. Cleavage revealing nipples, see-throughs, skirts so low/high, without panties, that shaving stubble, or everything, is revealed. If they allow that every week, how can they pick on this chick?

On top, she wore a bra, a shirt revealing no cleavage, and even a sweater on top of that! Her skirt was short, but a very common length around campuses and typical bars. Underneath, she wore panties! So what??? People saw no more than what kids see when cheerleaders do high kicks, or when bikini bottoms are revealed as the sarong blows open at the beach.

The prude who humiliated her in front of all those passengers should be fired.

Oh, I definitely agree the employee was out of line for speaking with her about the matter in front of other passengers.

My beef wasn’t even about the idiocy of delaying a flight over this otherwise ridiculous incident.

My beef IS about this kind of clothing being increasingly deemed “acceptable” outside of a bar (which, by definition, caters to adults only).

So, Denny, the argument that “everyone else does it” does not, in fact, make it right. (Geez, did I just channel your mother’s voice or what?)

Well, she has now shown the world that she has no taste in clothing at all. What a hideous outfit… That being said, I’ve seen far worse at airports, very sadly.

The part that was wrong was in making her an “example” when (as far as I know) there is no published dress code for flying any airline (except military).

If Southwest wants a dress code - I’m all for it! I’ll even try to fly them because of it. (well, let me make that a “maybe” because heaven knows I don’t want to get thrown off a plane for inadvertent dress code violation!) But you don’t just change the rules one day because you feel like it without letting your customers know. That’s not a good way to do business.

To be perfectly honest, I find it much more offensive when I have to view excessively FAT people try to squeeze into clothing that is 3 sizes too small…or expose their flabby belly. Don’t get me wrong…I’m no svelt honey…but I dress in clothes that I feel are flattering to my shape and age.

It’s my understanding that it was a male flight attendant that pitched the fit about her outfit. What’s up with that? Jealous??? I don’t mind seeing a short skirt on someone that looks good in it…more power to her, if I were younger and had the bod, hell, why not? Whether is was indecent is highly debatable and I seriously doubt it warranted betting pitched from the plane.

*PHEW* I’m glad I’m not the only one that saw that.

Still, while a touch short, I wouldn’t call the outfit THAT revealing. But the camera man DID have the best position in the house. If anyone on the plane was crawling on their hands and knees for that angle so they could complain, I’d have thrown THEM off first. Pervs.

I think it’s comparing apples to oranges to compare a daytime commuter-type flight to a Friday night trip to Vegas. It’s two different scenarios.

And there’s a lot of things that go on in bars and campuses that aren’t fit for public consumption. I’m going to start channeling somebody’s mother soon, too.

Ok, Mom(s). I live in LA, and I guess I’m desensitized to this stuff. Frankly, I see worse stuff when I pick up my daughters from high school every afternoon (not their outfits, mind you–other students’).

The airline was definitely out of line here. I’m not prepared to say Kyla was wrong at all, even if I don’t agree with her taste. I would have preferred a lower cut neckline (because there was no cleavage at all), and lower cut hemline (because I really don’t want to see up the ol’ address.)

I really feel that the guy was in the wrong here and not her. Yeah, it’s sad that our perception of what is acceptable and was it not is changing, I’ll give you that Kate.

But considering the fact that the airlines stated that there is no dress code and that so long as the appropriate areas were covered a passenger could fly, well that clearly shows the airline was in the wrong and should apologize at the very least for the humiliation she suffered.

So this guy…probably a bible-thumping sort…asks her to leave, but does so by giving her a lecture on what not to wear. How is that any different from a Muslim demanding that a woman wears a hajib and something that covers her down to her feet? Where do you draw the line the OTHER way. Bizarre.

If I can see your underwear you’re not wearing appropriate clothing.

Seems pretty simple to me.

I had the same thought when I saw this - good luck with that lawsuit now!

How embarrassing for her mother. As she sits there defending her daughter’s outfit, little does she know that Little Miss Appropriately Dressed just flashed her panties on national TV!

I would die before I would go on television and defend my daughter for dressing like a skank. (If I had one.)

She also stated that she was allowed to reboard the aircraft after agreeing to pull her tank top UP and her skirt DOWN, which I believe is how we saw it on the TODAY show. I hate to think how it looked before she made those adjustments!

I don’t know, I work for an airline and Umm who cares if Keith is of the bible thumping crowd or not, I see lots of girls wearing quite revealing clothing but until airlines have a dress code paying passengers can wear what they want. The only way I can see is if another passenger was uncomfortable with her dress and the flight attendant asked her to “cover up” but discretely and not march her to the front of the plane. It really doesn’t matter if the flt. was to vegas or timbucktu! There is NO DRESS CODE. I’m a mom too and can’t believe her mom was sticking up for her clothes but what is she gonna do condescend her daughter on national tv?

Are there no men left in America? Where are all the guys protesting Southwest’s action?

We were considering a march on their headquarters until we saw the “victim” in the case. Now, instead, we’re sending Southwest donations in appreciation for their efforts in keeping our need for eye bleach to a minimum…

Nah, this one of those no win situations. If we show support for her we’re called pigs but if we show support Southwest they’ll institute a dress code that requires women to wear burkas on their flights.

Er…displaying panties isn’t obscene. Tasteless, but not obscene. They are just panties. What if she was wearing a bikini bottom under her skirt? Would flashing that be ok, since they aren’t technically “panties”?

Tastelessness does not forfeit the right to travel, does it?

I haven’t a clue why that flight attendant did what he did. “This is a family airline?”

Steve, panties are underwear. Underwear — by definition — is supposed to be worn under something. Being under something implies being covered.

Saying “they’re just panties” can just as easily become “it’s just skin” so why should it be covered? Everybody’s got skin, right? Heck, half the population has a cootchie, so why bother covering it?

Please.

As for a bathing suit bottom, if she’s wearing it in place of panties then YES it should be covered.

Again, my point wasn’t to defend the flight attendant coming up capriciously with a dress code and choosing one girl to humiliate. My point was that the girl herself demonstrated a lack of decency that’s becoming rather endemic in the U.S. these days.

Frankly, I’m in favor of airlines and other public locations coming up with dress codes then both posting and enforcing them. Perhaps reminding people that there’s a different manner of dressing when one’s in public will remind them there is also a different manner of behaving when one’s in public, too.

Interestingly enough, she sat with a blanket over her lap through most of the interview and then took it off to make the point that it showed nothing. Which makes me wonder if she ever saw that crotch shot from the Lauer interview. Her closing statement? “I did not get waxed before this and you cannot tell.”

Classy.

WOOT WOOT. I saw this lil’ hottie trying to look prim and cute on the Today show. If Matt were a few years younger he may have had her doing the mamba for him in the green room. Love the crotch shot, and especially Mom’s proud smiles as her daughter cluelessly flashed the world.
I predict the horny sugar daddies will be lining up to sweep here into their UN-sponsored limos soon.

I disagree with “She’s clueless because she thinks Hooter’s is Family Friendly.” See, I have this friend who’s been to Hooter’s, he says that you would not believe the number of families there. My friend has seen birthday parties for adolescent boys there, complete with competitions for getting kisses from the waitresses. Young boy sports teams go there, under coach and parent supervision, for after-game food. In the ‘defining deviancy down’ era, Hooter’s is what passes for family friendly.

Is it just me, or is that repugnant to others? I rather miss the sense of decency and propriety that people used to demonstrate (mostly) in public.

Then again, I’m old enough to remember dressing up in Sunday Going-To-Church clothes to take an airplane (and that we actually had separate clothing for such a function, rather than blue jeans being OK everywhere).

Hooters waitresses are dressed no more racily than the cheerleaders at a high school football game. It connotation of the name is worse than the actual presentation — at least up here in Boston. I represented the people that established the first Boston Hooters — you’d have thought they were opening a strip club. Some of the Hooters restaurants in the south are a bit more revealing.

I’d have to say, however, that the birthday party for adolescent boys is really sort of putting the moth in the flame.
