Move Over, Clark Griswold

I’m pretty proud of our Christmas lights, although to look at them you’d never know they were anything special. As I’d mentioned earlier, we bought new lights this year after our old ones died during a ice storm last winter. Not that I expect anyone else to notice the change.

Being lazy, we go for the net ones you can just lay out on top of foundation shrubs, and at VH’s insistence our new ones are multicolored just like the old ones were. What makes them different is that we’re now using LED Christmas lights which consume a small fraction of the electricity of their incandescent counterparts. They’re more durable, too, so I don’t need to worry about shelling out for replacements if we have another ice storm before VH gets around to taking them down.

So why am I proud of them? Because ours is pretty much the only house in the neighborhood that’s using multicolored lights. Everyone else has gone for the “clear icicle lights dripping from the roof line look” that’s as mundane as the shades of beige they’ve all painted their homes in, too.

My son loves the fact that our house stands out by being so colorful. As he pointed out yesterday, Santa will have no problem figuring out which house is ours. Then again, if VH leaves our Christmas lights up as long as he did last year, the Easter Bunny won’t have much problem finding our house, either.

We are one of the few houses around that uses the multi-colored lights too. I love all the colors! I bought a pre-lit wreath that had white lights and so I bought colored lights to add to it. Must have color, that’s my mantra at Christmas.
I posted a picture on my site if you’re interested in seeing our lights.

I didn’t put lights on our house this year; but I did put our 12 foot “white trash” snowman out in the yard. I love it more than the kids.

I also have a strict rule on outdoor and indoor Christmas decor: after January 2, the line has been crossed and its time to pack it up until next season HO HO HO!

I have one string of white icicles hanging from under the porch eaves and one string of multicolored C-9s running along the top. I also have a white rope light that lights the porch step for the shih tzu and 5 red and white lighted candy canes in front of the vegetable garden.

Bryan, I have that same rule. This year I’m actually going to enforce it, too!

Kim, sounds like you’ve got all your holiday decor bases covered. :D

Not too much. There’s one home kind of nearby that has every inflatable under the sun in the yard (back yard too!) and lights and lights and lights on the house, on the fences, on the inflatables. Last Sunday they were having a party and there were at least 50 cars parked on both sides of the road (semi-major artery) and they had a cop and lots of flares in the road for traffic control. There’s another house that makes an American Flag out of red, white, and blue lights that covers most of their house. They also light everything that’s vertical in their yard (fences, walls, light posts, above ground swimming pool…)

That tractor sounds pretty awesome. I love original things like that.
