In Missouri they are technically river boats, although one is really a “boat in a moat” — a building they dug a moat around to claim that it’s “on the water.” After much wrangling in court, and no doubt a bit of payola, the place was grandfathered in.

Even so, calling them ‘river boats’ isn’t really accurate, either. They’re buildings which just happen to be built over the water — hence, they’re ‘on the river.’

Silly legislation prompts greater silliness to get around it.

Or did the states amend their gambling laws?

We have Indian casinos in California – and alot of them.

Full service – including live poker. There are, I believe, four big casinos in North Kansas City: Argosy, AmeriStar, Harrah’s and Isle of Capri. That’s on the Missouri side.

The Kansas side just approved casinos in a nearby county, which makes sense considering they’ve had dog- and horse-racing there for a while.

Lots of ways to lose money here. Lots.
