Like many people, I have a number of blogrolls that I work with. There’s the blogroll on this site which lists other blogs that I recommend to my readers but which I don’t necessarily visit myself every day. I have a separate blogroll for those sites, along with one for sites that I know only update two or three times per week and thus don’t need a daily visit.
Then there’s the blogroll of other bloggers doing sponsored entries that I visit. I’m beginning to seriously hate that one.
Almost daily that blogroll leads me to an entry written by someone complaining about how few comments they get and how seldom their stuff is linked by other people. Usually it takes all of one minute to realize what’s wrong with their site: they’ve loaded their pages with so many badges, buttons and blinky things that it loads slowly, causing all of the other pages in my browser to load slowly, too.
Of course, half of them are on one of those free sites like Blogger, which means they’re unlikely (read: too cheap) to spring for the services of a web optimization firm.
If you’re going to stick with your free hosting, fine. But don’t think for a minute you’re likely to get more website traffic until your site stops crashing peoples’ browsers, folks. Ditch some of those buttons and javascripts that you’re running and, for Pete’s sake, consider checking out how your website looks in other browsers so you can stop breaking mine!
That’s the first step to getting more hits, people. You must have a page that others can read! Beyond that, well, building up more website traffic to your site where you do paid reviews is a matter of blogging better and more often, without sounding like you’re trying to hawk snake oil. (Not that there’s anything wrong with snakes, mind you.)
Lucky for you, I happen to know of a new web site that will help you paid bloggers to do just that: Blogging For The Money written, not coincidentally, by Yours Truly.
You’re welcome, blogosphere.

Good post, Kate and your many suggestions (as painful as they sometimes are) have helped me.
I have a question about the Do Follow badge.
I don’t see it here anymore. Did it not prove successful?

It doesn’t hurt to plug a weblog post on your Twitter account. That’s how I got here.
January 8, 2008 at 1:12 pm
No, it wasn’t successful at bringing anything other than too much comment spam and a flurry of “Nice!” or “I like this!” comments from fellow bloggers. (I asked a while back to be removed from that blogroll and hope that I have been.)
In addition, it devalued the link juice passed on to the blogs that I do link to by choice.
That’s why I’m using the CommentLuv plugin now: it’s no_follow, but it does seem to send traffic toward people who participate in the comment section.

I’ve said “gak, please tell me they have a feed” too many times to count from just this issue.

Yes, I understand now about the No Follow group now. I never received too much comment spam.
I am contemplating a redesign and look forward to your future posts.
However, I have to drill sometime. (To everyone I am a dentist)
Do you have any thoughts regarding designers and what one should pay for a blog design?

Off the top of my head, no, I have no thoughts beyond making sure you find one that clearly understands your purpose for your blog.
I’ve paid anywhere from $0 to $250 for my various website designs, if that helps.

Thanks.
This really places the cost in perspective. Some online design sites are expensive – in the many hundreds or thousands of dollars.
I know we dentists are all rich but I do need to buy Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii.

With 5 blogs now I’m not sure when I’d find time to play!
January 8, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Agreed. But, I try to MAKE time…

I am new, as you know Kate, to this bloggin game. I get quite a few hits for no longer than I have been around but not many comments. I would like to get more interaction. I have always felt that blogs are akin to talk radio in the respect that lots of people listen; few people call or comment as the case may be…so how do you get people to say a few words beyond invoking religion, abortion, politics or sexual orientation.

Excellent question, Bryan. Tell you what: let me think about it a bit then I’ll answer it over at Blogging For The Money.

Best. Suggestion. Ever. I recently ditched one script-heavy theme for a lookalike that misses the bells and whistles, but is 1/6 the size and only uses a couple of scripts from plugins.
(I was about to include links, forgot they get stripped)
