Good Ol’ Fashioned Hypocrasy

by Venomous Kate

Another TV-Turn Off week approaches during which we’re supposed to nix the television not only for our own sake, but for the edification of our children. It’s about “saving lives,” right?

So why does it strike me as a little odd that when I checked my local PBS station’s listings for the week, I find that the Hawai’i Department of Education (DOE) has their “TeleSchool” programs running every day?

10:30 a.m. DOE Instructional Programming

11:30 a.m. Sesame Street [cc]

12:30 p.m. M, T, Th DOE Instructional Programming|W, F Clifford the Big Red Dog [cc]

01:00 p.m. M, Th DOE Instructional Programming|W, F Clifford the Big Red Dog [cc]|T Imagination Station [cc]

Isn’t it interesting that parents get blamed for using the TV as a “babysitter,” but an entire state’s Department of Education can get away with using one in place of a teacher?
