Raiding The Closet

by Venomous Kate

Like many parents, I’ve been trying to make sure my 7 year-old son doesn’t turn into a computer addict. He’s already online throughout the day, since we do much of our homeschool work online. I’ve found a number of kid-friendly web sites for him on days when the weather is bad.

The problem is that his computer is in our kitchen, and since I believe in monitoring children online at all times, I’ve felt tied to the room just so I can supervise him. Sure, I’ve got a laptop so I’m more mobile, but there are times I’d like to be able to work at my own desk downstairs.

So, after raiding the box of spare computer parts in our closet, VH and I put together a Frankenstein-like system for The Big-Eyed Boy to use downstairs. We took a hard drive from one old computer, the motherboard from another, a LAN card from a third, added a dash of memory, a new monitor and… well, you get the point.

Now that he has two computers available for his use, I half-expected that I’d never be able to pry him away from his computer. Silly me. He’d much rather spend his afternoons running around in the backyard playing G.I. Joe with a large stick substituting for his military-issued gun. The computer’s merely something he resorts to when being outdoors isn’t an option.

Then again, he’s not blogging yet.

  1. Cartoon Network games are driving me nuts because now the kids want to use my computer all of the time!

  2. That’s exactly why we pieced one together for my son. As soon as “Big Awesome House Party” came out, he can’t wait to get to the computer the instant he’s home from day camp.
