Over at Kim’s yesterday I took a “What Sci-Fi Crew Are You?” quiz. Now, I lean more toward the fantasy genre than sci-fi, whether that’s in books or on TV. So when the results came back “You are Firefly (Serenity),” I had no idea what that meant.
So Kim clarified things. Boy, did she clarifiy!
Firefly, the series and Serenity the movie take place in a future where the liberals have won completely and utterly. The government is our friend. The government knows what’s best for us.
This is a world where the phrase, “We’re from the Government and we’re here to help” isn’t met with distrust, but welcomed and believed.
This is a world where failing schools, while publicly denounced, are privately welcomed because they result in an ignorant electorate who believes that the Government is there to help. (Read the rest, it’s so worth it!)
Social commentary in a TV show? Intelligent writing? Wait, wasn’t that the one with Nathan Fillion? He’s not too hard to look at.
Of course, the series was cancelled long ago. Hollywood loves to do that to every show that rises above the trite and tired formulaic sitcoms or the schadenfreude appeal of “reality television.”
Luckily, I checked Amazon and found I can download the whole season or specific episodes. Sweet.

What’s funny is that Joss Whedon probably loses two years off his life every time somebody claims _Firefly_ as a conservative beacon of a show. He’s of the type that thinks BushCo will result in that kind of gov’t. in future.

But oh yeah, watch the whole thing. Mmmmmm, Nathan Fillion.

Mmmmmm, indeed!

You scored as a Deep Space Nine (Star Trek)
You have entered the dark side of the Star Trek universe. The paradise of Earth is far from you and you must survive despite having enemies on all fronts. But you wouldn’t have it any other way because you thrive in conflict and will know what needs to be done to take care of those around you. Now if only the Founders would quit trying to take over the galaxy

Kate, the entire series and the movie are worth the purchase. If I didn’t already have a full copy of both, I’d buy it again just to support Joss Whedon. It’s that good.

Anwyn, it’s the way I saw it. Loved the series and the movie.

And I may just have to pop the series DVD in the player right now since Fox News is all slow speed DUI chase all the time right now…

Firefly is amazing. It has some of the best characterization I’ve ever seen in science fiction. Worth every penny and every minute you spend watching it.

What everyone has already said. I originally bought Firefly based on the Previews of Serenity alone. My wife and I watched the whole thing looking at one another and going, “How did they take THIS off the air?”
Amazing show, great movie. You won’t be disappointed. And there’s lots females who aren’t hard to look at either.

One more thing.
Welcome to the Browncoats.
You can’t stop the signal.

We loooooove Firefly and Serenity. Own both. We actually went to a blogger press-screening for Serenity. Hahahaha. Frank saw Firefly when it was on TV and showed me the DVDs. I’ve watched the whole series and movie several times. Be a browncoat. Dooo it.

Well, I do look good in brown….

You did not already know about Serenity/Firefly?
Crudnuts. I have been failing in my duty.
My DVD boxed set is actually getting rather raggedy-looking these days, the number of times I watch it. I definitely agree with the previous posters – this series, and movie, are worth purchasing, if nothing else, to demonstrate to Fox just how bleeding retarded they really were.
Welcome to the losing side, Kate – definitely not convinced it’s the wrong one, though
(that will make sense a few episodes in
).

Oh, and shameless plug: http://www.wallsofthecity.net/serenity/
Which reminds me – I need to look up the progress on that Firefly MMORPG….
July 6, 2007 at 7:02 pm
Where were you when this was aired? Same as me, most likely, avoiding TV for the most part.
I got the Firefly DVDs on a friend’s recommendation, and love them. I bought a copy of Serenity when I was in Hong Kong, but have lost it… so I need to go to Amazon.

We borrowed the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer from our daughter and son in law and watched the first disk last night. The connection? Same writer, director, producer as Firefly/Serenity.
If you like Serenity, you might want to check out Buffy. We’re laughing a lot and not because it’s so bad like I suspected we would.
