Hi Kate! Its been a long time. I got over to here from your writing at Pajamas Media. As to Liberal misperceptions about Conservatives, all I can say is that some Liberals have brains and read things, others don't.

But it strikes me that Conservative philosophy and principles are beside the point, since their practices when in power in no way reflect those principles. The Republican Party is largely dominated by its conservative "values voters" and government in this country has been largely dominated by the Republican Party since the year 2000. From 2002-2006 we had a one party government unlike anything seen since Lyndon Johnson and the Great Society. And even more than that, in 2004, an absolutely clear majority of voters endorsed that one party government.

Political power just doesn't get any better than that in America. Conservatives had the best opportunity they have ever had to put their principles into practice and transform this country in their image. The election of 2004 could have been a momentous watershed like the elections of 1860, 1932, and 1964. It certainly was anything but that.

I would challenge you or any other Conservative to describe just what anything in these last eight years has done to advance the cause of "opposition to big government, a stance against the use of taxation or laws to implement social change, the importance of national security and adherence to traditional values". And, in all frankness, I don't think these are any more than empty words that Conservatives cannot define clearly enough, even to themselves, to turn them into practical policy.

Conservative government in practice means starting wars you can't finish, eliminating all your own "national defense" options in the process, strangling the Federal Government with tax cutting and then blithely making up the difference by borrowing enormous sums of money that you never intend to repay.

When I hang around places like Pajamas Media, all I hear is boo-hoo-hoo-ing about some unspecified occult power of the Mainstream Media that keeps this country so Liberal.

All I can say to that is you had your shot, guys. What did you do with it?

Yay! It's really an excellent book. So much so that now even VH is reading my copy, and VH does not like to read so that's saying a lot.

Sounds like a book I'm going to enjoy--or, at least, find educational.

often identified and/or self-identified as liberals or Democrats (labels just as prone to distortion as conservative and Republican), have quite a task sorting through the rhetoric and slogans to actually understand what a conservative is. In fact,an entire bookwas recently published to try to accomplish just that! But I’m realistic - I think the typical terms to describe people on either side are hopelessly compromised. That’s why I’m not a Republican. And I’m not a Conservative. I’m a PIP &#82
