Well, Crap.

by Venomous Kate

Due to security issues, I went ahead and upgraded WordPress to the latest stable version. As you may have noticed, the “Asides” are now screwed up. Not sure how to fix it, but I’ll try to find out. In the meantime, sorry for the double posts.

Hopefully I’ll hear from the site design gurus soon!

UPDATE: See, this is what I love about my site gurus! Not five minutes after I’d posted this, they came through. Agent Bedhead rocks!

Busy Behind The Scenes

by Venomous Kate

Since I had free time today, I figured I’d tinker with the blog a bit. I switched the in-line trackback plugin that Sadie had installed for me last week to one that validates and plays nicely with my other plugins, specifically the Show/Hide comment script that I installed today. (If you’re using IE7, it won’t work. You’ll just have to comment the old-fashioned way.)

I added a few more plugins, too, mostly for the convenience of The Envenomed all of whom, with the exception of Anwyn, appear to be MIA of late.

The New Look of Venom

by Venomous Kate

For your navigational ease — and to juice up the benefits to EV’s advertising sponsors — we’ve converted to a 3-column layout, thanks to the design wizardy of Agent Bedhead from Apogthegm Designs.

How’s it look to you?

You Like Me…Kinda…I Think

by Venomous Kate

A little while ago (ok, over two months) I pimped you for “endorsements”. Then life happened and I got distracted.

Well, thanks to the ever-brilliant Agent Bedhead of Apothegm Designs, who sent me ZombyRobot’s WP-Quotes Plugin, I finally can feature those nifty little quotes about me (a/k/a back-handed compliments) that some of you were nice enough to submit.

However, please feel free to leave more. A girl just can’t get enough of those little blurbs, ya know?

Your Thoughts?

by Venomous Kate

I’m still trying to decide whether to keep the Amazon lookup and shopping cart service over in the sidebar. As an Amazon affiliate, I earn referral fees for purchases made through the sidebar here and, what with every penny being precious these days, I like finding ways that my blog can generate income.

Personally, I’ve found it convenient several times over the past couple of weeks — I ordered a “dot-to-dot” book for the Big-Eyed Boy along with some printer paper, a book I’d been wanting, and some makeup that Amazon has priced cheaper than my local mall. I’ve been impressed with some of the book recommendations it’s featured, but annoyed with the amount of space it takes up on the sidebar.

What’re your thoughts on it: should it stay or should it go?

Computer Inconveniences

by Venomous Kate

Despite having a fairly slick desktop PC that’s barely one year old, I have been almost exclusively blogging from my old, trusty laptop — the one held together with duct tape and a wad of chewing gum. But not anymore! The Venomous Hubby moved my PC to the kitchen over the weekend and hard-wired it into the home network. I’ve got speed, I’ve got power, and I’ve got a monitor that’s big enough to read without squinting. Unfortunately, the PC doesn’t have my email accounts, bookmarks, news aggregator or other blogging-related conveniences.

Man, it’s so easy to forget the importance of a perfectly tweaked computer.

Your Name…In Hyperlinked Letters

by Venomous Kate

So I was visiting Agent Bedhead’s site (and Xrlq’s and VodkaPundit’s and…oh, all the other cool kids’ sites) and I now have a bad case of Endorsement Envy.

You know, the pithy little blurbs that so many others have on their site. The ones that say something witty, sometimes with more than one meaning, that make the site owner look cool and envied and self-deprecating all at the same time while also making the endorsement author look like a real wit?

I want one.

Ok, I want three or four. Maybe more, even, if I can figure out which plugin will rotate them with every page reload.

So, if you’re up to the task, write an “endorsement” for EV and leave it here in the comment section. Be sure to include your URL, so that when I figure out how to look suitably humble prior to displaying it for all to see, you’ll get the credit.

Consider it an early birthday present. (There are, after all, only 29 more shopping days left. Heh.)

That’s It. You’re in Time Out!

by Venomous Kate

Why is it that whenever I’m in a hurry to find straight-forward advice on a coding problem, I wind up having to wade through a pissing contest between code monkeys — neither of whom answer the question — and only eventually find that the person who does answer the question is the poor guy who’d asked it in the first place.

That’s another hour wasted.

UPDATE: And while I’m at it, why can’t PayPal and Amazon generate XHTML-compliant links?
