Russell Crowe: Security Risk?
We haven’t heard much about Russell Crowe lately (not that I mind). Perhaps that’s why he’s suddenly making headlines today… although if this is a publicity stunt, the man ought to be flogged.
Russell Crowe says Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda terror network wanted to kidnap him as part of a “cultural destabilization plot,” according to an Australian magazine.
In an interview published in the March edition of Australia’s GQ magazine, Crowe said FBI agents told him of the threat in 2001, in the months before he won a best actor Oscar for his role as Maximus in “Gladiator.”
“That was the first (time) I’d ever heard the phrase ‘al Qaeda,’ ” Crowe said. “It was about — and here’s another little touch of irony — taking iconographic Americans out of the picture as sort of a cultural destabilization plot,” he added.
Crowe was born in New Zealand and has a ranch in eastern Australia but made his name in Hollywood.
Destabilizing American culture? Anyone who’s had their ears assaulted by Other Ways of Speaking or Bastard Life or Clarity would consider Crowe’s kidnapping an act of mercy.
Everyone acts like this is news. I remember hearing about it during the 2002 Academy Awards show.
Not news.
Only radical Islamics would project their self defined monocultural model upon the USA. SoME lion of Islam had something other than tobacco in his huka when he decided he could disrupt one of the most diverse cultural montages on the planet by kidnaping a New Zelander and demanding what? That we all bow down to Mecca or they will make all the moonbats speak with his accent. Oh, please. Pass them all THE HAT.
He heard it wrong — it’s not al Queda, it’s MEG RYAN.
I get ‘em confused all the time. Especially since her lips have ballooned.
I’m with Timmer… this is a really old story! I don’t watch the academy awards and I was wracking my brain to remember how long ago it had come out – but that time period sounds about right. I’m surprised it seems to be big news all over again. Are they gonna drag the story out and make it headline news every 2 years or so?
I’d always thought that coming out with that kidnapping plot as people were voting on the Oscars was all about the publicity. Even now, I seriously wonder if it was Al Qaeda who was behind it. Seems like they had much bigger plans than worrying about some non-American movie star.
This might upset Mrs. Cid…
What th’…? Huh? WHAT?
Come to think of it, I seem to recall hearing that a TV show, Gladiator, The Series, was going to launch soon. Could this re-release of the story be purely coincidence???
Now why would al queda and bin laden want to go and kidnap a hollywood celeberty? why would they want to bother some of thier biggest supports?
