Myself, I know of no non-pagan religions that have these sorts of beliefs. In fact, no pagan ones come to mind either.

Still, 8 1/2 years in jail for almost a decade of dual incest? Wow, what a bargain.

I just hope the area he is housed in has a lot of similar minded individuals that will show HIM how to be a good "wife".

To lattegirl: I meant to put smilies in my original comment. Now that I read it again, it sounds harsh. My apologies. :)

1) Some wackjob using the Bible to justify something doesn't mean his "something" can defensibly be found or interpreted in the Bible.

2) If Christians lived by the Old Testament, which is where all those rules being discussed now come from, they wouldn't be Christians, but Jews circa ... B.C. I think it's pretty clear that not even modern Jews live by most of those rules any more.

Not only does the Bible not encourage fathers to molest their daughters, it speaks specifically against incest of all sorts. This man claims his perverted interpretation to justify his sick actions.

There's also not a whole lot in there about subjecting dark skinned people to slavery, blowing up abortion clinics or killing thousands (conservatively) in the Crusades but it was used to justify those things.

There is, however, discussion of puinishing people who touch menstrating women, rules for women and men's hair length and instructions that women are to be silent partners in their marriage.

What this man did was sick and he should be castrated and allowed to bleed to death. But, his use of the Bible to justify atrocities isn't unique. Additionally, to some Christians, ignoring other parts of the Bible is just as bad as inventing entirely new sections to justify your actions...

True. As that famous West Wing speech by "President Bartlett" goes:

I wanted to ask you a couple of questions while I have you here. I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important because we've got a lot of sports fans in this town: touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you? One last thing: while you may be mistaking this for your monthly meeting of the Ignorant Tight-Ass Club, in this building, when the President stands, nobody sits.

Damn, I love that one.

The reference to "scripture" is another reason for the assumption.

That said, as many of you have pointed out, there's nothing in the Bible about violating one's daughters. As such, I think we can all agree that regardless of whatever the "pastor" claimed he was NOT practicing Christianity.
