Drink and Be Merry: Grog, Glog and Egg Nog
I missed Tippling Tuesday this week due to pain and swollen hands. I’m sure that didn’t stop anyone, judging by some of the late night comments I received over the past few days. (You know who you are, and you know that I love you, too, maaaaaan.)
That’s a shame, too, because I’d been saving a few of my favorite holiday adult beverages to share with you. Rather than waiting until next Tuesday, I might as well post them today for all of you folks planning to engage in holiday drinking games over the weekend.
Grog
Serves: 1
• 2 oz. dark rum
• 2 oz. hot water
• 1 tsp. brown sugar
• 2 cloves
• juice from 1 freshly squeezed lime
• 1 cinnamon stick
Directions: Combine the ingredients in a sauce pan over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves. Pour it into a coffee mug, garnish with cinnamon stick and enjoy. You don’t even have to talk like a Pirate if you don’t want to, although after couple of them you probably will, anyway.
Glog (also known as Swedish Mulled Wine)
Serves: 6-?
• 1/4 cup sugar
• 7 whole cloves
• 1 bottle Port (the drink dictionary implies red wine might work)
• 6 or 7 cardamon seeds
• 1 stick cinnamon
• 1 cup raisins
Directions: Same as above, except strain the raisins before serving if you prefer, and don’t be surprised if you start speaking like that Swedish Chef from the Muppet show.
Eggnog
Serves: 6
(Yes, this is the raw egg version. You’re drinking booze, for chrissakes, so why worry about your health now??! But for the faint of heart, you can find plenty of salmonella-free drink recipes if you prefer.)
• 6 egg whites
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 6 egg yolks
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 1/2 cups whipping cream
• 1 tablespoon sugar
• 1/2 tablespoon vanilla
• 3 1/2 cups whole milk
• 1 cup light rum
• 1/2 cup whiskey
• dash nutmeg
Directions: Whisk egg whites in a small bowl until fluffy. Add sugar and whisk again. In second bowl, beat egg yolks and salt together. Add the whites in and combine until well-mixed. In third bowl, beat cream until it begins to thicken. Slowly add in remaining ingredients one at a time except nutmeg. Chill. Serve in glasses with a dash of nutmeg on each.
Fortunately, VH begins his Christmas vacation in about an hour, and that means Martini o’Clock is going to come early. Unfortunately, I woke up with a cold this morning, so chances are I’ll be abstaining but don’t let that stop you!

Maybe you could try the Better’n'eggs egg whites? or just buy a half-dozen or dozen package of the pasteurized eggs in the shells. Use a half dozen for the egg nog and the other half dozen for cookie dough that can be eaten raw! Yay!

That would probably work, too!
I remember one holiday season, during my sharp, short, and expensive experiment with marriage, I was sent out to obtain cardamon seeds for glog. Nearly any store had ground cardamon, but none had the seeds. (Ghu only knows why my wife wanted to grind the seeds in her own pestle, but I soon discovered that I knew nearly nothing about her.)
I eventually found the seeds. The drink was remarkably lousy (but, then, in my opinion, anything but scotch is lousy.)
I have cardamom pods because I’m a big fan of Turkish coffee, although I’ve learned the hard way not to make it until I’ve had enough of the regular stuff to wake up. Also, not to let VH make it EVER because it has to be poured back and forth several times to foam and, well, he makes an ungodly mess every time.
But you’re absolutely right, it’s a booger finding the stuff in most stores. I order mine from a gourmet spice site, along with a few other of the weird ingredients that I use regularly.
Aren’t the intertubes wunnerful? I found silver dragees at Amazon, but with a long lead time. I can’t find any in the stores at all. So no little silver balls on my cookies this year. I’ll have to order some after the new year and save them for next Christmas.
Then there’s Fluff. I like the 16 ounce plastic tub but couldn’t find it at the store. So I went to the Fluff site and you can order it straight from the source! Yay!

Unfortunately, Amazon doesn’t carry my beloved Tab soda (the original, not that girly pink energy juice). Now that the commissary isn’t carrying it anymore, either, I’m going through *serious* withdrawals!
Where did I see real TaB recently? Was it at WalMart? I can’t remember. But I did see the “real thing” somewhere. I know the new Energy drinks look like minature TaB cans, but I saw the full size cans somewhere…
I did find an I Love TaB site with links to places where one can obtain it in all it’s saccharine TaBBY glory.
I wonder if I need to leave a letter for Santa asking for some in my stocking?
Oh, wait. I’m the naughty twin.
Sounds like I’m out of luck.
Red says that Sam’s Club (Wal-mart) has Tab (soda). She also says that WinCo Foods carries it, or at least they do here. We aren’t sure if y’all have civilized stores out there in the hinterlands.
wg’s last blog post..Sweet!!!
I know they don’t have it at our closest Sam’s because I made a point of checking when I was there. Heck, I check in EVERY grocery store I go into, even when I’m out of town. (Found seven 6-packs in a grocery store in Custer, SD two summers ago and bought ‘em up. The clerk thought I was nuts!)
But since I have to ask what a WinCo Foods is, I’m guessing we don’t have them thar fancy stores here.
oooh! libations. I’ll have to try out the grog.
I didn’t have the energy to make egg nog this year. I made it last year for the very first time and it was delish.
