I remember my first Traumatic Bear Emergency. My bear (which I got when I was 2) lost his nose and his mouth to the washing machine. Fortunately, my enterprising mother was able to effect repairs, and my bear only had to eat thru his ears for a day or two.

Very true. I suspect that the more tender-hearted we let boys be when they're little, the better they are at being fathers and husbands when grown. I don't want my boy growing up believing his deep emotional attachments are likely to end in loss and that he just has to "toughen up" and get over that.

I'm hoping that the whole experience at least contributed to a sense for him that even when unexpectedly parted with loved ones there's most likely a reunion down the road.

Great ending to the story. I told my 7 year old boy about it and he could definitely identify....he said if anything happened to "Monk" his stuffed monkey, he would feel the same way and he said that he would be keeping Monk at home on vacations so he could be sure not to lose him. Gotta love little boys!
