… and I’m just another one.
Despite seventeen hours of flying, one cranky 4 1/2 year-old, and the airline’s best effort to provide sub-standard service at a premium price, we made it to Kansas City. I am so glad to be here. Glad enough that, even with jet lag, I woke up to watch the sunrise just to hear the morning birds singing in the oak trees. Glad enough that I tuned into the morning news just to watch the familiar faces of the anchors who kept me company years ago while I walked the living room floor, rocking my infant son back to sleep. Glad enough that I cried when I looked toward the horizon and saw… a horizon!
To my “Cards, Darts and Booze Buddies” in Hawaii: I’ll miss you. Be good, and if you can’t do that, be better than anyone else at being bad. Or, as Brett would say: “If you’re going to be a bear, be a grizzly.” And plan on coming to visit. Like we said, the guest room will always be ready when you are.
To everyone else in Hawaii: Mahalo.
Damn, I’m glad to be home.

The mainland doesn’t have flowery necklaces for you, but we do have some kick-butt steaks. Fire up the BBQ and have a ball.
Nice to see you home.

Congratulations!!!!!! Isn’t it a great feeling? I experienced something euphorically similar when I came home from Germany after 5.5 years.

While you’re in KC you might as well eat at some good restaurants. You probably have your preferences, but here are a few of my KC faves (in no particular order): 1) the BLT at the The Peanut (the original Peanut at 49th and Main, not the lame pseudo-Peanuts around town); 2) Rosedale BBQ burnt ends — yep, it’s the best in town. Bryant’s? Gates? Pshaw! Those places are for the Iowans in town for the Plaza lights. 3) Another great BBQ place — Lil’ Jakes Eat It and Beat It (downtown, around 10th and Grand) 4) Want more upscale? The American’s always great. If it’s too pricey — which it often is — 39th Street has developed a number of really good places. Mimi’s is Vietnamese and is awesome — try the spring rolls.
Wow, I rarely if ever miss KC, but after writing this I guess it’s time for a trip back myself. Enjoy your stay.

The BLT at the Peanut? Man, I love that place. That’s where I had my first martini, and where I met Hubby… all on the same wonderful night.

After coming to your site a bit ago via commentary on VodkaPundit… I’ve enjoyed the reading. I had no idea you were from KC. Welcome back from a fellow citizen of KC. Good to have you home.
