What Footwear To Wear This Winter?
It’s almost Christmas, and here in Kansas that means it’s also really freaking cold. With snow expected tomorrow and an overnight low in the mid-teens, just going outside for the morning paper now requires bundling up in multiple layers.
So naturally, being a bit of a clothes freak who insists on having the right shoes for every outfit, I’ve been asking myself, “Self, what shoes does one wear with all of these bulky and heavy layers?” And, obviously, the answer is: something warm.
So lately I’ve been thinking about buying myself a pair of ugg boots. Oh, I know: thanks to celebs like Pam Anderson, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears pairing their Uggs with sloppy sweatpants, the Australian-born boots have, to many, become a bad fashion choice.
But with the premium merino sheepskin and thick inner fleece providing all that warmth and comfort, I’m willing to take that style risk. (I do the same thing in the summer with Crocs, although I hear that the Ugg boots’ fleece, which keeps feet warm in the winter, helps keep them cool in the summer, too.)
The only question is whether wearing them will make me look like Pam Anderson, Paris Hilton or Britney Spears? Yeah, I know: that’s asking a lot out of a pair of boots, isn’t it?

Uggs can make you look blonde, vacuous, overmedicated, or like you have implants? Wow. That is saying a lot.
Incidentally, I have a pair, and I’ve never felt that I looked the least bit like any of them, even if I borrow Red’s skimpy things to try on. Er…not that I’ve tried it. Because that would be kinda gross.
Not to mention that you’d have to go without panties.
But my head will get cold!
LOL Just do what I do and drive your car to the mailbox at the end of the driveway.
LOL!
Those Ugg boots do look warm and comfy, but it says not to get them wet! That would never work here
Wait, wait, wait. You still get a morning paper?
I know, it’s crazy, isn’t it? But I always get nervous taking the laptop into the bathroom.
I think women look hot in those boots, umm I think your boobs are bigger and better than Pams and Paris doesnt even have any
As the man said, “Silicone parts are made for toys.”
Put the word “footwear” in a title and I’m here.
Problem with the celebs is they pair Uggs with short skirts or short shorts. That helps make them look vacuous and slutty.
If you can’t get them wet, Uggs would rarely work here in Quebec.
It rains all the time here, and I wear mine every morning.
If you’re going to wear them outside, then make sure you get the ones with the hard bottoms and tread, not the leather bottoms, and make sure you treat them with suede water repellent stuff. Just try not to go wading or through ankle-deep snow, and you’ll be fine.
Actually, come to think about it, Kate, I recommend the non-leather bottomed ones anyway. The ones I have have them and after several years of wear, they are quite slick on carpeted stairs.
Thanks for the safety tip. As we all know, if it’s possible to fall down somewhere, I’ll be the one to do it.
You go out to get your paper? That’s why I have children.
By the time I finish arguing with mine over WHY he needs to go get my paper and how I am NOT making his breakfast until he does so, it’s not really “news” any more.
As a Canadian, I know from winter (I live in the second coldest capital city on Earth - only Ulan Battor in Mongolia is colder). Those look good if you are shopping in a mall. They look totally impractical if you are expecting to…oh, I dunno…walk in the snow outside.
‘The only question is whether wearing them will make me look like Pam Anderson, Paris Hilton or Britney Spears?’
Sorry- that would require (respectively)
silicone
a night vision video tape
lots of fried foods and bad parenting choices
oh- and lobotomies all around
will
Dang. I’m all out of silicone.
I love my Uggs and I miss them when I am away from them. People may hate me for them, but I know what comfort feels like.
I also own leg warmers.
I have a true Uggs story that occurred a couple of years ago in a large ski/outdoor store in a wealthy area of our city where my daughter was the buyer.
Daughter was called out on the sales floor to explain to a rich, noisy woman why the were out of her size in the style of Uggs she wanted to purchase. Daughter explained to the woman that Uggs were rather hard to get since they were made of a finite number of natural materials.
Uggs were allocated to stores based upon previous years purchase, etc. The woman did not want to listen and kept getting louder so then daughter told he that there were only so many lambs born each year in New Zealand (or Australia, I don’t remember) and no matter how much the company would like to ramp up production of Uggs, God allowed momma sheep to have only so many baby lambs at a time.
It never occurred to the woman that the excellent Ugg boots were an animal product and then she went off on a loud rant about how disgusting a business was that would make money off of selling parts of dead babies.
My daughter called me and told me the story and then she asked me that age old question, “How can stupid people be so rich?” My reply was to ask, what color was the ladies hair, body shape and then I told daughter that maybe the woman had other wonderful qualities that did not have to do with intelligence. Remember trophy wives are made, not born.
By the way, daughter and grand daughter love their Uggs.
Remember trophy wives are made, not born.
Bahahahaha! Good point.
I still chuckle that Pam Anderson - the rabid PETA spokeswoman - was the one who initially made these boots famous in the U.S. Apparently, sheep are okay in her book to wear but not eat.

sporto has some really cute ones!
What kind of footwear should be worn with a pair of suede shorts?
I’d say it depends on their length and the top you’re wearing. Short shorts with a blousy top would look great with wedge ankle boots in cool weather or wedge platforms in warmer weather. Mid-length shorts look good with pointy-toed pumps or gladiator-style platforms. Longer shorts (gauchos, really) look great with high boots that disappear beneath the hem and a fitted top.
