Who Needs A Bullet Bra?

All this weather blogging might be getting a bit mundane, but it’s freaking cold here. To make matters worse, our heater doesn’t seem to be doing its job. I’ve got it set on 70, but the thermostat says it’s 64 in the house, and even then I think it’s being generous. The heating repair dude is on his way but says it may be three hours or so before he can get here.

Meanwhile, there’s another ice storm moving in this evening and continuing through tomorrow. My area is expected to get between .75 and 1.25 inches of ice, which is enough to cause some problems. But, let’s face it, this is Kansas: ice in the winter is par for the course.

Really, the ice isn’t the worst part of an ice storm around here. No, the worst part is all the idiot drivers who figure that if they can’t see the ice, the roads must be okay. And, maybe it’s not that they don’t actually see the ice. Maybe they just can’t read the weather report or watch the darn news, either, because if they did they’d realize what the rest of us already understand:

Precipitation will be moderate to heavy at times, and significant accumulations of ice from one half to one inch are expected. In addition, embedded thunderstorms are expected, which will produce rapid ice accumulations that may exceed one inch. This long duration storm system has the potential to produce significant damage to trees and power lines.

Make sure you have an adequate supply of food. Check furnaces and fuel levels. Do not run generators in enclosed areas! travel is discouraged but if necessary, make sure your car is winterized and in good working order and carry along a safety supply kit that includes food, blankets and a cell phone.

An ice storm warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected. Significant amounts of ice accumulations will make travel dangerous or impossible. Travel is strongly discouraged once the freezing rain begins.

Freezing rain, ice AND thunderstorms. Oh, my. Was it really just the other that I wrote about how I love good weather events? Perhaps I should’ve been more clear and explained that I love them when I’m observing them from the warm and cozy indoors. Right now, my house is anything but warm, much less cozy.

It’s so darned cold in here that I think my nipples might just freeze off. Having been cold for hours now, I’m not sure that I’d care and, in fact, it might provide a bit of pain relief.

Not that you needed to know that.

If you have hot water. Close the drain on the tub, start hot

water, when hot switch to shower, continue until tub is

almost full. Optional use fan near doorway to extract warm

air from bathroom.

Feel free to hop on a plane and visit with us. It’s Northern California and so far a warm winter here. It’s 57 outside and with the windows open to the greenhouse and the heat off it’s 80 degrees inside! Yep, I said 80 degrees. Also, if you have a gas stove, along with Sine Nomine’s suggestion you can boil water in a big pot to help warm the house and add humidity to the dry air. :D

That sounds lovely! I do love NoCal. I grew up in the Bay Area, and have always thought of the area around Humbolt as God’s Country.

Sine, thanks for the tip! I’ve got a huge garden tub in my bathroom but with a separate shower. Unfortunately, I also have 15 foot ceilings in my bathroom… which means it takes forever to get hot and steamy in there. That’s great in the summer, but in the winter, not so much. Especially when trying to shave one’s legs in the shower….

We have twelve foot ceilings in our bathroom AND a fan/light that can be set on low to move the warm air off the ceiling down into the room and out to the bedroom. We also have a gas fireplace that can run w/o electricty. I hope you don’t have to end up burning the furniture in the fireplace to get through the next few days. Of course, I live in Olathe which is so south of the Venom household. BOL

Hey, those 30 miles can be night and day. Remember the last storm of last winter? You guys got slammed, and we didn’t even get a flake.

Huh. I just checked, and even our Courthouse and county offices are going to be closed tomorrow. You folks in Olathe haven’t clothed anything besides Meals on Wheels.

Are we wimps, or are y’all nuts?

My parents think I’m nuts. They live about 2 hrs. north of you. I’m stuck in middle GA where the only sign of winter is the rise in crime rates and the grass turning brown. Right now I envy even an ice storm with power outages that last for days. Some of my favorite memories of childhood and when my oldest two were little are when the ice storms knocked out electricity for a day or two and we spent our time gathered around the kerosene heaters with books, card and board games and the battery powered radio. Seems like the only memories I have the oldest two not fighting and destroying the house.

Pretty good chance of no school tomorrow, so I will probably be in my jams playing with my kids in the morning. Teachers love snow days just as much as kids….I just hope we don’t lose power…that would suck.

It’s getting hard to keep track of you two Chelles! ;) I know what you mean about fond memories of bad weather days. I’m sure my son will remember them one day as the times when Daddy stayed home in his PJs just like us.

Bryan, the VH agrees but says that it’s true even of teachers whose students are adults. The only hard part is wondering why, at least at Ft. Leavenworth, they don’t make the closing announcement the night before so he could enjoy the sleep in. (This time, at least, they’ve said there’s a 2-hour delayed opening.)

Incidentally, yes, that is actually more information abuot your nipples than I was actually prepared to be okay with. Look on the bright side, though - if all keeps going that way, and you need to cut your way out of a frozen shell, now you have something to do it with. :/ lol

One advantage of living further north, even though there is colder weather (it is 20°F, according to the weather sites) and more snow, is that there are no ice storms. (Here, BTW, is the Twin Cities.)

I remember, from years ago, living near Pittsburgh. One morning, while I was attending “charm school” for my employer, going out to find my car covered with a half-inch coating of ice. I could not even open the doors of the thing, until after hours of chipping away. (”Charm school”, again BTW, was my employer’s failed attempt to teach me how to be a manager.)

After I got the driver’s side door to open, I started the car and let it sit, running, for a couple of hours. This enabled me to chip some ice off of the windsheild.

Of course, in hilly PGH, driving was still an enormous challenge. A few streets were sanded and salted, but many were still very difficult. Fortunately, few people were driving, so as I slalomed down one street, I did not hit anything.

When I got to my apartment, I was pleased that I still had power; something it took a week to restore to places slightly south. (Of course, the reason for the power failures was that the state regulatory commission did not allow the utilities to trim the trees back.)

I sympathize with the problems in and around Kansas City. It has been 30 years since I had similar problems. (30 inches of snow may limit your mobility, but it doesn’t (usually) cause power to fail.)

Speaking as an unreconstructed male chauvinist pig, I would think that VH would enjoy warming you and your [well, I've said enough.]

Hey VK, I’m in the saddle at 0700 as usual this morning. No Big Deal. When we lived out on the farm (west of Desoto, KS) snow days were spent with the fire placeburning, Monopoly on the floor and baked apples and popcorn. The best of times.

Do you know how much we would love precipitation of any kind?

And would LOVE LOVE LOVE some snow! Everybody else is wearing their shorts but I put mine away.

It is 80 here. I had to run the A/C in the car today.

I know that’s not a very nice thing to tell you. Seems like we could work out a deal with God. You get some warmth, we get some coolth and some wetteth.

Hope the heater guy shows up and makes the inside of your house a tropical rainforest — without the rain.

At least the sun was shining today. Yes, it was cold but if the sun shines it makes my outlook a lot better.

True. The sun hitting the ice is absolutely gorgeous. Then again, we’re now under a flood warning thanks to so much ice melting and hitting the creek all at once.

Frying pan, fire.
