A Little Ho, Ho, Ho For Your Ex- (That old ho.)

by Venomous Kate

Are you done with your Christmas shopping yet??? If not, don’t feel bad. I haven’t even started making my list, much less deciding who’s naughty and who’s nice. Evidently, I’m wayyyyy behind.

- As early as mid-October, my local Wal-Mart featured side-by-side displays of Halloween costumes and Christmas ornaments.

- The candles in our jack-o-lanterns will still warm to the touch on Tuesday morning when a Kansas City radio station changed its format to 24/7 Christmas carols. The 80-degree weather that day only heightened my disorientation. Strange to hear about “White Christmas” when I’m once again digging my tank-tops out of storage to avoid heat stroke.

- Last night while the parents on my street stood outside watching our children ride bikes and play tag, two of my neighbors discussed their plans to put up holiday decorations this weekend. There’s a $10 bet riding on who gets their lights up and lit first.

- This morning as I dropped my son off at school I heard one Mommy announce that she finished writing and addressing her Christmas cards last night, much to the envy of the other Mommies who said they were waiting until the Thanksgiving weekend to do theirs. (I’m still deciding if I’ll send cards this year or blow it off and claim that I’m being environmentally-friendly.)

Personally, I’m not buying a darn thing or dusting off a single ornament until Thanksgiving is over. Then again, I don’t have an ex- for whom I’d gladly shop early to ensure their Goddammo arrived on time!

  1. I must confess that I have done some Christmas shopping and purchased Christmas cards. What!? They were on sale at Borders.

I have as my goal for this weekend to have my parent’s Christmas gifts purchased and wrapped. I do not use credit cards and I pay cash for everything so this spreads out the expense over a couple of months.

  2. Happy Hallowthanksmas, Kate!

I’d love to tell you that I’m holding off in protest but the reality is: I’m disorganized.

    Damnit.

  3. P.S. Goddammo. HEE – FREAKIN – LARIOUS!

Wish I had thought of that.

  4. Thanksgiving stuff doesn’t go up until Halloween is over. We just turn the jack-o-lanterns around so they look like plain pumpkins. This weekend we take down the Halloween Dept 56 display.

Christmas stuff doesn’t go up until the daughters come home from college in December. I would however like to put up the lights when its not freezing out.

Christmas cards. I don’t think we have actually addressed and mailed the Christmas cards since the first daughter left for college. I don’t think we found a picture and ordered cards last year either. We could probably print address labels to speed the process, but then we would have to write some fiction to describe whatever we did this year. Who’s in what year and which ever major this semester (and who cares).

  5. I havnt even started mine until next month after turkeyday is over dont jump the gun

  6. You don’t even have to claim you’re being “environmentally friendly”. Just say you’re

    a. fighting the greeting card conspiracy
    b. saving money by not spending it on stamps, which are going up in price AGAIN next year
    c. not sending cards because mailing correspondence cards is an evolutionary artifact of a long-past age

I wish I could do any of these, but I’ll be guilt-tripped into spending $50 on cards and another $10 on stamps this year by the wife, who believes more in sending cards than anything else holiday-related.

  7. Perhaps she lied (the Mommy that said, loud enough for you to hear, that she had finished her cards). Yeah that was it. Now I feel better. Turn on the game and bring me a drink!

  8. The only store that should be showing Christmas decorations already is Hallmark – those of us who have to wrap presents early need someplace to buy wrapping paper, other than that, I don’t think the Christmas stuff should come out until after Thanksgiving.
