Obama’s Ooops
Delivering a speech in Richmond, Virginia, Obama Barack took it on himself to inform listeners of the tornado destruction in Greensburg, Kansas. Problem is, Obama exaggerated the fatalities, telling the crowd that 10,000 people died in the devastating storm. The actual figure was 12.
Twelve and ten-thousand. Not sure how one could confuse those numbers, really. But Obama has an explanation of sorts:
“There are going to be times when I get tired,” he said. “There are going to be times when I get weary. There are going to be times when I make mistakes.”
I’ll feel more comfortable when I know for certain there won’t be times when he is anywhere near the nuclear launch button.
[Aside by Anwyn: "There are going to be times when I get weary?" Please, dude, save it for a speech about something that matters. All this gaffe required was a laugh at yourself. But no, that'd be too much like Bush's folksy missteps, right?]
[And one from VK: "Weary?" Does anyone really talk like that?]
You know, I could almost understand it if he made an error somewhere in the same order of magnitude – off by a few counts, sure… That is well within the realm of “Yeah, ok, everyone makes mistakes.”
But off by three orders of magnitude? Come on. That is the kind of mistake that you just know is wrong even as it is leaving your mouth.
And then to go and make pathetic little excuses for it? And this man wants to be in charge of one of the most powerful militaries in the world?
Yeah, that gives me all manner of warm and fuzzies.
Wasn’t 10,000 the original, erroneous, fatality count after Katrina? Didn’t it turn out to be far, far fewer?
Why do they insist on speaking in sound bites?!
