[...] I have no doubt that eventually, comment spammers will find some way to render nofollow ineffective. Until they do, nofollow is a nobrainer. Unless you specifically intend to allow your commenters to boost their Google rankings or those of other linked sites merely by commenting (as Kate and Lonewacko do), there is no earthly reason not to install the nofollow option.
Attention Comment Spammers
You can still spam this site if you want, but it won't do you an ounce of good. Neener.

Thanks: Clint Ecker. Hat tips to Venomous Kate and James Joyner, neither of whom have seen fit to install it themselves.

Kate, you left a comment on my blog with a link, but looking at that page, there are so many discussions about different methods of blocking spam, I wasn't sure which one in particular you were referring.

So...is it back to the blacklist methodology?

thanks,
MB

To be honest, I'm not a terribly big fan of forums. I use them on my hosting site for customer service issues, but for blogging I prefer linear comments - and trackbacks - laid out under the pertinent post.

Or you could do what we did and use forums... sure, they require a valid e-mail address to register, and you have to click a confirmation link in your e-mail, but you can set your forum software so you don't need to collect any personally-identifiable information.

We haven't gotten any spam yet. Of course, we also only have 20 registered users, but hey, we're new.

I also like forums because they're easier to discuss things in. But that's just me.

Spam News
This is fantastic news on the comment spam front. Make the spam useless for the intended purpose and voila, no more reason to spam comments, for the most part. I like it.
