Not The Change I Was Expecting

by Venomous Kate

My laptop, which I use as my primary computer, is fried. By all appearances, the hard drive is dead beyond repair, but I secretly suspect that the poor thing just didn’t want to suffer the indignity of having the phrase “President Obama” typed upon its keys.

So, I’m hoping that a change of hard drive is enough to solve the problem. Meanwhile, I’m using my old desktop computer which, because I’ve ignored it for over 2 years, means I have hours of downloading and installing updates (and making the desktop pretty) before I’m back up to speed.

Thank goodness I’ve been religious about backing up my data each week. Unfortunately, those backups didn’t include email… so if you’ve sent me something in the past 72 hours, don’t hold your breath for a response. (Unless you’re a liberal, in which case you should probably get used to holding your breath and waiting.)

  1. mine is set to back up every day to an external hard drive. I’m thinking about getting another. 1TB drives are under $130 at Buy.com

  2. If my old-fashioned desktop setup didn’t involve getting down on my hands and knees, I’d hook up one of those TB drives in a heartbeat. As it is, I’m waiting for my much more agile and much younger son to come do it for me.

Most of what’s important to me is backed up somewhere online and on one or both of my daughters’ computers. My desktop is 9 years old now and I’m beginning to worry about it.

I hate using a laptop unless I’ve got my split keyboard, old-fashioned mouse and multiple monitors hooked up to it… wait, I could have three monitors with the laptop… wait, wait! This could work!

  3. We’ll probably get an external in the very near future. As far as saving data, I’ve been using my old iPod as an external drive for backups. Hey, it’s already paid for and now that I’ve got an iPhone why would I use the plain ol’ Pod?
