When D.J.s Get Dumped

I don’t get to listen to the radio much these days, mostly because my son thinks that audio equipment was invented for the sole purpose of playing Kidz Bop. Now, rather than endure that mind-numbing musical travesty, I simply leave the stereo unplugged and make excuses about why it’s not working.

But I do miss it. I’m one of those strange people who actually prefer radio to CDs, particularly radio programming from smaller stations. There’s something about listening to a DJ’s song selection that’s analogous to blogging: you get to know a bit about the person by the tunes they choose to play.

Like when a disc jockey plays a slew of depressing songs because they just got dumped. But, seriously, what kind of list of depressing songs doesn’t include Crowds by Bauhaus? (I wouldn’t listen to that at work, folks.)

Ben Folds to the rescue… Song for the Dumped :) (No, not for the radio…)

I do like the one indie station out here, 94.9 FM. I’ve discovered a few nice bands though them, though they have a propensity for playing too much reggae-styled music.

Well, since that song ‘Kate’ that Ben Folds wrote about me (or at least I’ like to think so), Ben obviously has my vote for the Most Depressing Song Ever.

We just got the regular guys back on the air in atlanta they have been fired two times already in atlanta,I can tell you atlanta radio sucks but with them back on I have something to listen too..yay

One of our big rock stations recently let its entire Morning Show staff go. The station had been losing ratings for quite some time.

They’re good, but they’re all age 48-60, and most of them have worked Morning Shows for various stations around town over the past twenty years.

So the station fired them in the plan of bringing in a crew with a fresher feel more close to the ages of the station’s target demographic. The fired DJs are now suing, claiming age discrimination.

Thing is, they were fired over their ages… but their ages were the reason why they felt so out of touch with their demographic.
