Rassin’ Frassin’ Upgrades
There’s an urgent release of a WordPress upgrade that addresses a potentially serious security issue, particularly for those of us who like to save unfinished entries in draft mode. Since I’d missed out on the last three upgrades, I figured I should probably jump on this one.
A word of advice: follow the directions about disabling all of your plugins. I’d never really followed that step in previous upgrades, so I didn’t this time, either. Big mistake, that.
You’ll probably also notice once you’ve upgraded your WP installation that several of your favorite plugins have also been upgraded. Half of mine were out of date, so I’ve spent the better part of today upgrading each one. Not fun.
All I can say is thank goodness for the Firefox FireFTP plugin.

Google for Wordpress Automatic Upgrade… life’s quite easy with that plugin. I’m tech-savvy, and KNOW how to do the upgrades, set permissions, etc, etc… but this is the greatest plugin since Akismet.

“Automatic” things always scare me since my templates are all customized and have a habit of going wacky whenever there’s an upgrade.
That’s a good point, and I don’t know your theme setup; I don’t think it should matter much, but I guess it’s better not to take that chance if you don’t have to.
Well I think, having spent the past three hours banging on my keyboard, that I’ve finally managed to get the template, the upgrade and all of my plugins to play nicely together. But don’t quote me on that.
I am new at this whole blogging thing. I wasn’t going to do the upgrade. I am still busy tweeking my site but it sounds like I should do the upgrade before I tweek further.

I think that’s a really good idea, Bryan. Get it upgraded then tweak your template, add plugins, tweak more. Lather, rinse, repeat as necessary.

I agree that Wordpress Automatic Upgrade is an AWESOME plugin – I’ve been using it with the past three upgrades I’ve done and have not had issues with my customized bits and pieces.

I came across something weird in one of my posts recently a </script? thingy. You couldn’t see it, but it was there when I went into edit a post (something I do a lot for spelling) and I immediately deleted the offending code and told myself I MUST do the upgrade this weekend.
